
Climbing this mountain has its rewards! At Mt. Takao, you can go hiking, monkey-viewing, beer drinking & firewalking just an hour from Tokyo. The shrine at the top of Takao-san is just a short walk from the cable car and chairlift…

Make a wish at this sub-shrine if you’ve got a burning wish to discover the person connected to you by the red thread of fate…

or make an offering and duck through this hole, then pray at the sub-shrine for good heath and strike the bell.

There’s also a nicely landscaped monkey and wildflower park at the top, with about 40 resident Japanese macaques.

Early March brings plum blossoms to the farms surrounding Mt. Takao—a region known for growing the fruit that becomes umeboshi pickles and ume-shū plum wine—and there are plenty of blooms on the nice walk along the Minamisakawa river to the Kogesawa plum grove.

In mid-March, they build a bonfire as big as a city block at the Yakuo-in temple…

for the famous Hiwatari Matsuri firewalking ceremony…

You can line up to follow the priests across the hot coals!

If sitting on top of a mountain hoisting a cold one is more your speed, the Beer Mount beer garden is open from mid-June to early October.

And in the fall, it’s an excellent place to see autumn leaves.

Hours of cable car to the top: 8:00 to around 17:45, with longer hours on holidays and weekends.
Hours of chair lift to the top: 9:00 to 16:30 (16:00 from December – April). Admission ends 30 minutes before closing.
Cable car/chairlift ticket prices: Adult round trip: ¥930, (one way: ¥480), Children (3-12) round trip: ¥460 (one way: ¥340).
